Trading Strategies to Survive Blade Runner Deja Vu

Economic instability has been a hot topic in the international news. Any who have seen the movie Blade Runner should be having feelings of Deja Vu.

There has been continued talk since 2004 of OPEC moving off the U.S. Dollar in trading oil shifting to a monetary unit based on a basket of currencies. It is true that no one has suggested that trading eminis or S&P500 futures be traded with a currency basket based unit. But, the precedent below likely to be a bellweather. October 8, 2009 Robert Fisk of the Independent in the UK wrote that China, Japan and France have all agreed to start trading oil using a basket of currencies - including the yen, yuan, euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar - instead of the dollar. Fisk said this will start in 9 years. A lot can happen in 9 years. Before you get too comfortable, Max Keiser has indicated that that the new currency schemes will include up to 50% gold. According to Keiser the time table for moving from the dollar as a reserve currency can be a lot quicker. Consider that BRIC countries are moving off the dollar for issuing credit to each other.

BRICS credit: Local currencies to replace dollar SANYA: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - the BRICS group of fastest growing economies - Thursday signed an agreement to use their own currencies instead of the predominant US dollar in issuing credit or grants to each other. The agreement, the first-of-its-kind, was signed at the 3rd BRICS summit here attended by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, China's Hu Jintao, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff, Russia's Dmitry Medvedev and South Africa's Jacob Zuma. "Our designated banks have signed a framework agreement on financial cooperation which envisages grant of credit in local currencies and cooperation in capital markets and other financial services," Manmohan Singh told reporters at a news conference with other BRICS leaders.

In the scope investment world-wide this shift may be of less impact than in the U.S. Or for U.S. Citizens.

Diversification into precious metals is one alternative. Internationalizing the holding portfolio is another. One of the problems U.S. Investors face is finding above board alternatives to having currency tied up in U.S Dollars.

One of the potential opportunities for diversification is a set of financial instruments like the ones offered by Everbank World Markets.

One of their headlines on their website is: Get global diversification with a basket of currencies.

It is certainly worth a look.
