Trading Futures or Night Trading, Learn By Using The Simulator
The first training tool for every beginning trader or seasoned professional is the trading simulator. This is the best tool for learning to buy and sell stocks or futures contracts. It is also a great tool for discovering new trading strategies, all without risking the cash in your brokerage account.
Simulators are very sophisticated additions to any trading platform. Simulators keep up with the Market real time while providing real world trading experiences. Both stock and futures brokerages allow traders to download an online demo trading simulator so that they can learn order entry and exits as well as market temperment. Most simulators let traders enter "mock" buys and sells, setting profit and stop losses just as they would were they trading live. This gives them a real method to test out strategies.
Novice investors just learning to trade are at a great disadvantage...they don't know if they can trust what their eyes see. Sitting in front of their technical analysis charts, they see buy and sell signals but can't decide if those are real entries. Not wanting to risk their cash, so often they sit and watch, unable to pull the trigger. Meanwhile the chart reveals what they thought was true all along. Without real world experience, it is entirely understandable. Trust only comes after actually trading So using the simulator gives the novice trader a chance to learn to rely on what the charts are saying.
Simulators also enable traders to learn the mechanics of trading. How to enter and exit a trade, how to use stop losses, trailing stop losses, OCO (Order cancels order), how to trade the news, etc. These would be expensive learning curves if you were trading with cash.
Using a live simulator works for seasoned professionals as well. Want to develop a new strategy? Trade the strategy using the simulator until you can trade the new strategy with at least 85% accuracy. It may take some adjustments to the strategy to make it work well but that's ok, there is no cost to your portfolio.
The key to using the trading simulator is to trade as if it were live cash. Too often traders play with the simulator as if it were a video game, not putting any importance in the losses they incur, not learning from the mistakes. Instead, each and every trade should be re-examined after made. Attention should especially be paid to losses. Why was the trade done? What indicators were missed before clicking buy or sell?
Day traders are always trying to find better ways to trade, finding new strategies that give giving them more faith in their indicators. As such, simulators are an essential part of their learning experience.
